A PNSO book, The Beauty of Liaoning: Wonders of Life 120 Million Years Ago, recommended by the Department of Science and Technology of Liaoning Province and published by Liaoning Science and Technology Publishing House, was on the list.

This work is one of the outcomes of an innovative research project on provincial brand storytelling, organized by the Liaoning Provincial Federation of Social Sciences. Liaoning is where Archaefructus liaoningensis, the world’s first flower, quietly blossomed, and where Sinosauropteryx, the first ever discovered feathered dinosaur, once lived alongside many other feathered dinosaurs. Tracing Liaoning’s paleontological history is a journey into the origins of life on Earth and is inherent in the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity. The simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, and English editions of this book have been released simultaneously.

Using paleontological fossils discovered in Liaoning as a thread, this book explores the evolution of life on Earth during the Cretaceous period, 120 million years ago. Through collaboration between scientific artist ZHAO Chuang and the science writer for children YANG Yang, it brings to life a diverse array of creatures, including dinosaurs, pterosaurs, ancient birds, and aquatic reptiles.

Drawing upon scientific discoveries and research, the creative team has synthesized knowledge from the natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities and arts. Through exquisite, masterful artwork and evocative, moving words, they narrate the wondrous stories that unfolded across the prehistoric landscape of Liaoning. The book strikes a perfect balance between scientific rigorousness and artistic expression; it serves as both a vivid tribute to the natural splendor of Liaoning as a world-class paleontological fossil treasure trove and an invitation for young people to explore the region’s profound natural history.

The National Outstanding Popular Science Books selection is widely regarded as China’s most authoritative and prestigious popular science book brand.
