Creative Activities in Children’s Space

PNSO Dinosaur Museum Creative Activities in Children’s Space Solution: Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus and Dinosaurs from Shangdong Scientific Art Exhibition is part of the “PNSO New Aesthetic Education Project: Join ZHAO Chuang and YANG Yang to Creating Amazing Stories on Earth” which is facing to the children aging 6 to 12. In this solution, we provide two scientific art activities.
Activity I: PNSO Dinosaur Museum Scientific Art Exhibition of Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus and Dinosaurs from Shangdong: Explore a Scientific Art Exhibition.
Activity II: PNSO Dinosaur Museum Scientific Art Exhibition of Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus and Dinosaurs from Shangdong: Join Us in Creating a Scientific Art Exhibition.
Children participating in the activity will learn about designing an exhibition, from planning and preparation to presentation and visiting. They will also participate in the planning, design, and presentation of an exhibition.
We take exhibition, a specialized scientific art activity, as a means to integrate science and art. Children will learn about classification in biology, understand the laws of evolution, and get ideas about the differences between individuals and why the differences exist. They will be able to compare things according to logical rules, have a preliminary sense of creating characters, and eventually use artistic means in an exhibition to share they thoughts.
By taking part in the activities of the Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus exhibition, children aged 6-12 will develop readiness in science, writing, logic, practical skills, and expression to enhance their capacities in cognition, thinking, and hands-on.

Explore the exhibition and take a first look at how ZHAO Chuang and YANG Yang created Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus.

Foreword

Welcome to the “PNSO Dinosaur Museum Scientific Art Exhibition of Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus and Dinosaurs from Shandong.” In this exhibition, you will follow Xiaoqin and its partners to appreciate the unique scene of the Late Cretaceous. Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus was an excellent herbivorous dinosaur. It lived at the end of the dinosaur era and encountered unprecedented challenges brought by nature, but it still lived a fulfilling and colorful life. By using scientific art, this exhibition reconstructs Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus and other dinosaurs living with it in the same region, depicting a lively and flourishing land.

The Discovery of Tsintaosaurus and Early Speculations

Tsintaosaurus was one of the most famous hadrosaurids. Its fossil was discovered in Laiyang, Shandong Province, in 1951. Seen from the fossil, its most important feature was that the nasal bone was a hollow, rod-like structure extending forward and upward, forming a spinous crest, so the researchers named it Tsintaosaurus spinorhinus. According to the fossil, researchers reconstructed the crest of Tsintaosaurus in the shape of a stick. This used to be the most important symbol that distinguished it from other hadrosaurids.

The Skull of Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus

Scientists performed CT scans and three-dimensional reconstruction of the iconic nasal bones of Tsintaosaurus to have a more accurate understanding of its entire skull. Many crested hadrosaurids had a hollow tubular structure inside the nasal bones, but Tsintaosaurus were different. Their nasal bones were solid inside, but the crest that extended from the nasal bones forward and upward was hollow, which means that their crest could also make sounds. This is the skull of Tsintaosaurus reconstructed according to the latest research. It allows us to understand the anatomy of its head more clearly.

Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus

However, the well-known image of Tsintaosaurus was not how it really looked like. In 2020, a new study confirmed that the crest of Tsintaosaurus was not the shape of a rod that we are familiar with but wider and larger. This unique crest stretched forward and upward, unlike most hadrosaurids’ crest that stretched backward and upward. This is our Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus, reconstructed based on the latest research. The wide and towering crest makes it beautiful.
