Who is Qichuan the Tuojiangosaurus?
Qichuan the Tuojiangosaurus was a stegosaurian with its fossil found in present-day Zigong City, Sichuan Province, China. Its specimens are relatively well preserved, which is of great significance for people to study the evolution of stegosaurian dinosaurs. Qichuan comes from the Tuojiangosaurus family. Depending on the exquisite fossils and the research of scientists on the fossils, we have accurately restored it.
How did ZHAO Chuang and YANG Yang create Qichuan the Tuojiangosaurus?
The Size of Qichuan the Tuojiangosaurus
Qichuan the Tuojiangosaurus was huge, with a body length of 11 meters, and weighed about 5 tons. The size of its head alone exceeded 1 meter long. Its body was robust and could attack powerfully.
The Head of Qichuan the Tuojiangosaurus
The head of Tuojiangosaurus was relatively elongated, which was different from other stegosaurians found in the same region, such as Huayangosaurus. There were large and small plates atop its head, similar to ankylosaurs. These characteristics are clearly shown in our restoration.
The Mouth of Qichuan the Tuojiangosaurus
In the past, people thought that stegosaurians had a relatively small mouth and large cheeks, but recent studies suggest that they might have no cheeks, but their mouths were large. We adopted this rather late theory when restoring the Tuojiangosaurus.
The Bony Plates of Qichuan the Tuojiangosaurus
The bony plates of Tuojiangosaurus were very narrow in acute-triangle shape, arranged in pairs. Because their bony plate fossils are incomplete, people speculate they had about 15 to 18 pairs. The sharp bony plates are our focus when restoring the Tuojiangosaurus.
The Limbs of Qichuan the Tuojiangosaurus
Tuojiangosaurus had short forelimbs and long hindlimbs. When restoring the limbs of Qichuan the Tuojiangosaurus, the challenging part is the long and sharp spines on its shoulders.
The Tail of Qichuan the Tuojiangosaurus
The tail of Tuojiangosaurus was very long, with four tail spikes at the end. At present, we are not sure about the angle at which their tail spikes extend. Were they almost perpendicular to the ground like those of the early stegosaurians? Or almost parallel to the ground like the late stegosaurians? We have taken a compromised way to present the tail spikes of Tuojiangosaurus.
