On September 2, 2025, the PNSO Dinosaur Museum series welcomed a new addition: the 1:45 scientific art model of Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus” — an unnamed dinosaur discovered in Hong Kong and we temporarily call it Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus”.

Prototype designed by: ZHAO Chuang
Stories written by: YANG Yang

How was Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus” created?

This is an art project inspired by a scientific discovery, not a formal scientific presentation. We use the name “Hongkongsaurus” with the best of intentions, not as a formal, scientific name for this dinosaur. We believe only researchers have the right to name species, and we do not; we write stories based on scientific facts. Huigui (meaning “reunification) is a literary name for one individual in the “Hongkongsaurus” group, a name that defines its identity and image in our “PNSO’s Stories on Earth”.

Once scientists announce their research and the official name for “Hongkongsaurus,” we will promptly update the species’ scientific name but keep Huigui, the literary name.

Before the discovery of Huigui’s fossil, there were no records of dinosaur fossils in Hong Kong. Although Hong Kong possesses numerous Mesozoic sedimentary strata, the era when dinosaurs flourished, local scientists had conducted multiple explorations over the past century without obtaining conclusive evidence of any dinosaur bones, until Huigui emerged.

This marks the first discovery of dinosaur fossils in Hong Kong, with collection and research conducted jointly by scientists from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and researchers from Hong Kong. Over 30 rock specimens containing dinosaur bones were collected from Port Island, but most fossils were preserved in extremely hard host rock, so cleaning and restoration would take a long time. To date, only one specimen was preliminarily restored, and our reconstruction of Huigui is based entirely on it.

Unlike previous reconstructions, the first step in our process was not building Huigui’s skeleton from fossils, but rather determining what kind of dinosaur Huigui was. Indeed, with scarce material, we cannot classify it with too much confidence. However, the fossil does provide clues, and the history of science is ripe with numerous dinosaur studies based on minimal fossil evidence. This reconstruction therefore becomes an intriguing scientific exploration, requiring us to start from limited information to propose various possibilities, evaluate each hypothesis, and ultimately decide the direction to go forward. During the reconstruction, we also had to refer to contemporaneous dinosaurs with close phylogenetic relationships to infer its structure and appearance, while analyzing equivalent strata to deduce its paleoecology and other dinosaur groups that lived around it.

Synthesizing all the evidence, we ultimately reconstructed it as a mid-Cretaceous titanosaur, morphologically similar to the Huanghetitan liujiaxiaensis, discovered in Gansu Province, China.

Model Material / Environment-friendly PVC, hand-painting
Model Structure / Solid Structure

Of course, this reconstruction is based on the extremely limited fossil fragment. We anticipate that as scientists continue their fossil work, Huigui’s appearance may change, a process precisely that illustrates the dynamic nature of scientific inquiry and the fascination of scientific art creation.

Now, Huigui will meet everyone in the form as we reconstructed. Thank you for your care and attention. In the coming days, let us anticipate more fossils of Huigui being restored and join us in the wondrous journey of creating it!

PNSO Dinosaur Museum Creative Activities in Children’s Space Solution: Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus”, An Unnamed Dinosaur Discovered in Hong Kong and We Temporarily Call It Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus” Scientific Art Exhibition is part of the “PNSO New Aesthetic Education Project: Join ZHAO Chuang and YANG Yang to Creating Amazing Stories on Earth” which is facing to the children aging 6 to 12. In this solution, we provide two scientific art activities.
Activity I: PNSO Dinosaur Museum Scientific Art Exhibition of Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus”, An Unnamed Dinosaur Discovered in Hong Kong and We Temporarily Call It Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus”: Explore a Scientific Art Exhibition.
Activity II: PNSO Dinosaur Museum Scientific Art Exhibition of Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus”, An Unnamed Dinosaur Discovered in Hong Kong and We Temporarily Call It Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus”: Join Us in Creating a Scientific Art Exhibition.
Children participating in the activity will learn about designing an exhibition, from planning and preparation to presentation and visiting. They will also participate in the planning, design, and presentation of an exhibition.
We take exhibition, a specialized scientific art activity, as a means to integrate science and art. Children will learn about classification in biology, understand the laws of evolution, and get ideas about the differences between individuals and why the differences exist. They will be able to compare things according to logical rules, have a preliminary sense of creating characters, and eventually use artistic means in an exhibition to share they thoughts.
By taking part in the activities of PNSO Dinosaur Museum Scientific Art Exhibition of Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus”, An Unnamed Dinosaur Discovered in Hong Kong and We Temporarily Call It Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus”, children aged 6-12 will develop readiness in science, writing, logic, practical skills, and expression to enhance their capacities in cognition, thinking, and hands-on.

Preface

Hong Kong’s abundant Mesozoic sedimentary rock formations hint at the likelihood of buried dinosaur fossils, yet successive explorations yielded no concrete evidence. In October 2024, the discovery of a large dinosaur bone fossil on Port Island made global headlines, finally broke the long silence. To date, over 30 dinosaur fossils have been unearthed, but due to their conditions, only one specimen has undergone preliminary restoration. An initial study suggests it likely belonged to a large, elderly dinosaur from the Cretaceous period.
On July 1, 2025, the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong’s reunification with China, we released a dinosaur model based on the fossil named Huigui (meaning “reunification” ), symbolizing its witnessing of this historic moment.
Which dinosaur does this fossil represent? How did we reconstruct its appearance and paleoenvironment based on this fossil? Join us in exploring the scientific art exhibition of PNSO Dinosaur Museum: Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus” An Unnamed Dinosaur Discovered in Hong Kong and We Temporarily Call It Huigui the “Hongkongsaurus” to unravel this creative journey.

Huanghetitan liujiaxiaensis

To which dinosaur group does Huigui belong? A definitive answer must wait after scientists complete the fossil restoration and research. Before this conclusion emerges, we may make intriguing speculations based on the preliminarily restored piece. Scientists hypothesize that Huigui might be a sauropod or an ornithischian, most likely a titanosaurian sauropod, with the fossil being its coracoid. We call it “Hongkongsaurus” for the time being. Thus, in our reconstruction, we made it as a titanosaur. Due to limited fossil material, our work relied on what we know about other titanosaurs. Based on the era Huigui lived in, we infer it should resemble Huanghetitan liujiaxiaensis.
