Who is Isaac the Sauropelta?
Sauropelta is a genus of well-known ankylosaurs because their fossils are well preserved, including intact skeletal fossils and many scales preserved in situ. Based on these intact specimens, we created Isaac the Sauropelta.
How did ZHAO Chuang and YANG Yang create Isaac the Sauropelta?
The Head of Isaac the Sauropelta
Sauropelta was a relatively primitive ankylosaur, with its head closer to that of stegosaurians than late ankylosaurs. There were no prominent horns but small bumps at the back of their head. Instead of cheeks, they had bony plates on either side of the lower jaw to keep food from falling. All these features were presented in emphasis when we created Isaac the Sauropelta.
The Neck of Isaac the Sauropelta
Isaac the Sauropelta had large plates growing around its neck, and these plates were arranged in three rows with six pieces in each, some of which had developed into spikes. We restored the appearance of these plates according to the specimens of Sauropelta.
The Limbs of Isaac the Sauropelta
Like most ankylosaurs, Sauropelta had short forelimbs and long hindlimbs. They had long spines on their shoulders. When we reconstructed the limbs of Isaac, all these characteristics were accurately represented.
The Back of Isaac the Sauropelta
People have found mummified fossils of Sauropelta, so when we created Isaac the Sauropelta, we were able to accurately reproduce the position of each plate on its back and show the arrangement of these plates.
The Tail of Isaac the Sauropelta
The tail of Sauropelta was very long and flexible, resembling that of stegosaurians, unlike ankylosaurs. This means that the plates on its tail were arranged sparsely, which was fully demonstrated in the restoration of the tail of Isaac.
